My mountain bike gears haven’t been this gunked up since rides in San Diego County with Greg Nesler. There were times when I felt that the next pedal stroke would break a sprocket or two free and it’d be a long walk back to the car.

Grit is an impediment to mountain biking but a necessity to break free from the confines of corporate culture and succeed in Free Agent Nation.
Several months ago I participated in a Grit Study. The premise of the study was to measure an individual’s “passion and perseverance for long term goals”. I just received my score last month. According to my age group, I am average. As hard as this is to accept for a person like me (see Know Thyself: Part 1 & Know Thyself: Part 2), accept it I did. In fact, I have embraced it and plan to Crush It in 2010.
It’s never too late for resolutions. I resolve to put more grit in my gears in 2010.
What will Mr. Spacely do without us.
So, what are you doing?

“There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.” – Morpheus, The Matrix (I’ll spare you the video this time but you can find it here if you just can’t resist like me)

In part one I spoke of my experiment to identify my strengths. My signature themes being: Strategic, Ideation, Futuristic, Maximizer, and Self-Assurance. This post is about applying our inherent talents to our areas of expertise and passion. So, taking cues from Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000 Hours” from Outliers combined with joint research conducted with Hank Lambert in 2007, I developed a concept of what I am calling a Proficiency Curve to illustrate this process.

Temet Nosce. Or to be more precise, “thine own self thou must know”.

Allow myself to introduce myself. For those that know me best, seldom a day should pass that I am not asking, “Who am I”? And I know that you do it to, evidenced by the more than 1 MILLION user generated quizzes on Facebook. You know the ones. ”What Periodic Element Are You?”, “What Friends Cast Member Are You?”, “What Golden Girl Are You?”, ”What Famous Starlet Are You?” (OK, I sort of like when my friends take this one), and so on, and so on, …
Understand that I am not ignoring the entertainment value of these quizzes. I am just puzzled by our need to compare ourselves to things and people both real and fictional. Admit it. Some people believe that these quizzes are revealing something new about themselves that they would otherwise not have known. (I won’t go into the concerns some have raised in regards to information privacy.)
But, I am not immune to taking quizzes to learn something about myself which is why I recently purchased the new Strengths Finder 2.0 and took the online assessment. Watch this short clip from The Matrix and I’ll share what I have learned.
